Midweek Meditation: Wednesday, October 15, 2025

Dear Calvary Family,

Have you heard the question, “Why are hotdogs so truthful?” The answer is punny: “Because they’re frank.” (I hope you groaned at that joke!)

Truth and lies. Honesty and falsehood. Sincerity and fiction. These all spin around us and among us in our interactions with one another. So, how does truth or falsehood impact or interact with our ability to hear God’s voice from among all the other noises and chaos of our world? Truth matters very much as we listen for and to God’s voice. Jesus reminds us that He is “…the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) To know Jesus, therefore, is to meet the truth. To hear Jesus is to hear the truth.

But often our hearing gets in the way… not because of our ears, but because we want to hear what we like or what feels good. Or, we want to hear what doesn’t cause us any effort or behavioral change. Paul warned Timothy of this hearing problem in his letter, “For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound teaching, but, having their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

Join us on Sunday as we consider how to avoid ‘itchy ears’ which block our meeting and hearing of Jesus, who is the Truth we seek.

May we continue to hear God’s voice so that we are hearers and doers of His word,
Pastor Michelle

Here’s what’s happening in the life of our Church and how you can get involved:

VACATIONS
Please join us in praying for the pastors as they enjoy some time away with their families: Pastor Michelle is on vacation this week celebrating her 25th anniversary with Eric. Pastor Jolita is on vacation the rest of this week enjoying the time with her family during Fall Break.

WOMEN’S RETREAT REGISTRATION IS OPEN
November 8 is approaching quickly! Time to start planning for a beautifully fulfilling day! Life is full of ups and downs, but God’s grace is greater than our hardest seasons. Come experience an authentic, uplifting message with Bible teacher and speaker Cindy Bultema who has walked through the pit and discovered the power of God’s redeeming love. Don’t miss this chance to refresh your heart and be reminded: You are deeply loved. Invite your friends and family and head to https://calvaryunited.org/womens-retreat/ to sign up today.

SPECIAL TIME THIS SUNDAY
Rev. Dan Gangler is preparing to move south in the next couple of weeks! Please join us this Sunday after the service in Fellowship Hall as we share our appreciation of his service. We also welcome Merle Illg as she replaces Dan as leader of the Friendship Sunday School class that meets weekly in the Choir room. Class will not meet formally there this week so that the group can gather in Fellowship Hall but it will resume next Sunday on November 2.

OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH
Thank you to all who have shown their love and appreciation for Pastor Michelle, Pastor Jolita, and Dr. Mark so far this month. If you would like to do something, there are baskets for cards on the table across from the office. If you have any questions or would like to contribute to a gift, contact Jill Robertson (shepherdskid1@gmail.com). Thank you!

BIBLE STUDIES RESUME THIS MONDAY
The 10:00am Bible Study and Women’s Bible Study at 6:30 in the evening will resume this Monday, October 27.

YOUTH GROUP
Because of Fall Break, Youth Group will not be meeting again until next Sunday, November 2. In addition to Youth Group starting back up, Youth Handbells will also start that night! Bring a friend and come at 5:00 for bells, followed by Youth Group at 6:00.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL
We’re looking forward to classes resuming this Sunday, October 26. Enjoy the rest of your break!

CLASSICS LUNCHEON
Let’s celebrate Fall together! Meet us for lunch this Tuesday, October 28 at noon in Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite people, along with a side or dessert to share, and we’ll see you there! You may RSVP at the Mission Table in the hallway or by contacting the office (317-852-2541 or office@CalvaryUnited.org).

OCTOBER MONTHLY MISSION
Lucille Raines Residence is a facility owned and operated by The United Women in Faith of Indiana (formerly The United Methodist Women of Indiana) since 1977. It houses up to 49 individuals who are actively engaged in rebuilding their lives from substance abuse. They all share in learning to function independently in day-to-day life. Many are finding Christ to be the source of successful recovery. Find out more at https://lucillerainesresidence.org/.

FALL CHURCH BUILDING CLEAN-UP: COME WHEN YOU CAN, LEAVE WHEN YOU HAVE TO
We’re having a second workday this Saturday, October 25 from 8:00am until noon, cleaning up around the church. We will have a few different chores to check off the list and would love your help in getting them done. Many hands make light work, even if you can only share an hour! Chores include things to get the building ready for winter, like reflective markers in the parking lot and placing salt and shovels at the doors, along with some maintenance and cleaning things in the sanctuary and kitchen, hanging shades in fellowship hall and putting pads on the chairs in the Choir room.

MORE FALL CLEAN-UP: A GREAT SERVICE PROJECT, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUTH AND FAMILIES
The Brownsburg Older Adult Alliance is hosting its annual Fall Raking (no bagging!) on November 15th and 22nd. There are two sessions on both of those days: The first one starts at 9:00am; the second starts at 1:00pm. We will meet here at church at the garage. A sack lunch will be provided. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before the time you signed up for. Bring a rake and garden clippers if you have them and dress for the weather. Rain dates will be both Sundays at Noon. Visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C4AACAE28A6F94-59245969-fall/170167945#/ to sign up today! (If you are a student in need of volunteer hours, this is a great opportunity for that!)

INFANT & TODDLER FAMILY FELLOWSHIP
We will meet again on Saturday, November 15, in Fellowship Hall at 3:00. We will discuss suggestions and tips for coping with stress at the holidays. Plan now to join us!

SIGN UP TO READ TO THE CLA KIDS
