Midweek Meditation: Wednesday, April 29, 2026
Dear Calvary family,
Imagine a TV show entitled , “Lifestyles of the Open and Obedient Disciple” instead of the “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”(1984-1995). Would anyone watch it? Not sure Robin Leach would be the right host for the show. Perhaps we could ask Jonathon Roumie (who plays Jesus in The Chosen) to host.
But wouldn’t it be curious if we followed disciples around every day throughout their day as they live their lives? That would certainly exhibit how discipleship is a lifestyle.
Last Sunday Pastor Jolita highlighted for us how disciples belong to the body of Christ through their worship and hospitality. This week our conversation will focus on how disciples become more like Jesus through our openness and obedience to God.
Openness to God is best experienced and developed through spiritual disciplines. Obedience to God first bubbles out of a grateful response toward how God has moved in your life and then is deepened by the application of life in everyday life.
Here’s a moment in ministry that shows the marveling work of the Holy Spirit. We set in motion many, many months ago that this Sunday, May 3, would be our Confirmation Sunday. It is a special worship service in which our younger disciples show their outward commitment of faith. And it just so happens that the Rite of Confirmation is a public expression of the teens’ openness to Jesus and their obedience! I appreciate how the Holy Spirit brings all things together! May we all confirm that we seek to become more like Jesus.

With the eyes of our hearts enlightened by the hope which is Christ Jesus,
Pastor Michelle

Here’s what’s happening in the life of our Church and how you can get involved:

CURRENT SERMON SERIES
We have started our six-week series on “Discipleship” called “Follow Me”. During this time, we will also celebrate our youth’s commitment to following Jesus during Confirmation Sunday this week. The series will take us up to Pentecost.

NO YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL THIS SUNDAY
Because of Confirmation this Sunday, our Youth Sunday School will not meet but will instead celebrate after the service with our friends from class who are confirming their faith.

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH PRAYER TIME
Bring what’s on your heart and come for morning prayer in the sanctuary! See you this Monday, May 4, 6:30am.

MAY MISSION FOCUS
Our May monthly mission focus is our third annual LEGO Camp! This camp was created in place of the VBS camps of previous years and is extremely popular, using the theme of building and sharing our faith. Monies collected will help fund all the various parts of this outreach, including crafts, decorations, snacks, scholarships, and more! Thank you for your support and we’d love to have you join us! Find out more here…

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR LEGO CAMP!
In order for LEGO Camp to be a success, we need LOTS of volunteers! Those interested must be high school age or older. We are specifically needing several interested in leading a group. Please prayerfully consider helping in this way! If you are willing to lead a group, there will be teacher training on Saturday, June 20, 10am-11:30am or Sunday, June 28, 11:15am-12:45pm. A recent background check will be required for those 18 and older. Sign-up sheets are available at the Mission Table or contact the office. Volunteer registration deadline is June 15, 2026. Let’s make this the best LEGO Camp yet!

LEGO CAMP PREP SESSION
There are lots of crafts and decorations to prep ahead of Camp so we are having a LEGO Camp prep session on Sunday, May 17, from 11:15am-1:00pm. Please join us in the Youth Room. Many hands will make the work light!

REGISTER KIDS FOR LEGO CAMP
Registration for LEGO Camp 2026 has begun! Tell you neighbors, family members, and friends who have 4-11 year-old students to join us July 20-22. Share the Sign-up here: https://calvaryunited.org/summer-camp/!

JOIN THE COLUMBARIUM COMMITTEE
Are you interested in learning more about the Columbarium and Memorial Gardens that are developing so beautifully outside the windows at church? A great way to learn more is to be a part of the committee! The committee meets only every other month at 4:00pm here at church to discuss items that come up. If you’d like to find out more, contact Tom Hanna at skhtgh@tds.net today.

KEEP OUR FLORA BEAUTIFUL…
Spring has sprung and we are in need of volunteers to care for our lovely outdoor flowers and plants on a regular basis. They need attention every other day. If you are able to give any amount of time to this ministry, please contact the church office or Brenda Caron for specifics.

…AND OUR GARDEN OF EATIN’
In addition to the flowers and plants around the church, we also have three very long rows of vegetables behind our playground. The produce grown there is harvested and brought to Messiah Lutheran’s or Cornerstone’s Food Pantries every Saturday morning. We can use all the help we can get with this, whether you might prefer to just water, or if you don’t mind weeding and harvesting. Meet us there Saturday, May 9 at 9:00am or to find out more and get on the volunteer list for this, contact Lisa in the church office!

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
Hope Healthcare Services is sponsoring the annual National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 7. Meet them at IU West Hospital Dining Area in Avon. Breakfast will be offered from 7:00-7:30am with the prayer program from 7:30-8:15am.

COMMUNITY LUNCH – BURGERS AND HOTDOGS
On the second Saturday of each month, we host our Community Lunch for members of the community who have been invited at the Blessing Boxes around town and through our local food pantries. We’d love to have you volunteer by donating, helping, and/or socializing at our next one is Saturday, May 9, from 11:00am til 1:00pm! Sign up at the Mission Table in the hallway. If you have questions, please contact the church office.

MEN’S BREAKFAST
Our next men’s group breakfast will be held in Fellowship Hall on Saturday, May 16, at 9am! Join them for good food, delicious coffee, and lively conversation!

A TEA PARTY
Avon UMC Women’s Council is having a tea party on Saturday, May 2nd, 1:00-3:00pm in their Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite teacup and enjoy refreshments and a guest speaker. Tickets are $5.00 available through Sunday, April 26th. Text Anne Inman, 317-504-9268, if you are interested in a ticket.

MESSIAH LUTHERAN’S FOOD PANTRY AND THE MEIJER “SIMPLY GIVE” SPRING CAMPAIGN
Our neighbor, Messiah Lutheran Church, has been given the opportunity to partner with the newly built Meijer store in Brownsburg. From May 6th, when the store opens, through June 27th, Meijer customers may add a “$10 Simply Give” donation card at checkout and all of the donations during this time will go only to Messiah Lutheran’s Food Pantry. The donation is converted into a Meijer food-only gift card for the Food Pantry to purchase food.

Additionally, when done on Saturday, June 20th, for every $10 Simply Donation card a customer adds to their purchase on Meijer will DOUBLE MATCH the donation, adding an additional $20. That means Messiah’s Food Pantry will receive $30 for each Simply Give donation card purchased that day.
Important to note: Only cards purchased at the Brownsburg Meijer will go to Messiah Lutheran’s Food Pantry. You can help us feed our neighbors in Brownsburg in this way. Please share this opportunity with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and relatives as every dollar will make a difference to Messiah Lutheran’s Food Pantry.
