Dear Calvary family,
Why pray if God is Sovereign?
What a question! I know how much I don’t know, and I totally accept that in a way that humbles me. But there are things that I trust. I have faith without fully grasping how it works. If knowing that God is Sovereign causes us to pray less, I am afraid we don’t grasp what God’s Sovereignty is or what prayer is. Prayer is vital and not optional. Of course, God can do anything in any way He wants to! But think, God, in His plans, has chosen to invite us into a relationship… in His plans!
In Acts 12, we read that the church prayed for Peter. Luke, the author of the book, very intentionally writes that while Peter was in prison, “the church was earnestly praying for him.” “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him…” (Acts 12:7a). I am sure God could rescue Peter by many miraculous ways… but don’t you want to be a part of what God is doing? Don’t you want to experience His presence? Don’t you want your heart to be changed because of what you experience through prayer?
Above all, God commands us to pray. The Bible is very clear that God wants us to be praying. Scripture tells us we are to pray without ceasing. It’s a question of obedience when we engage in the practice of praying.
Wherever you are in your prayer journey, I invite you to deepen it. I invite you to set a time to pray. Pray with others. Pray and come to worship with us on Sunday.
Meet you in prayer,
Pastor Jolita
Here’s what’s happening in the life of our Church and how you can get involved:
A REMEMBRANCE GATHERING
This Saturday, June 8, from 1:00pm until 3:00pm, Virginia Waymire and her family will host a time to remember her husband, Glen. You are invited to stop by church and visit with them in Fellowship Hall.
JOIN SUMMER CHOIR!
No rehearsals during the week and no robes during the service! Meet us instead every other Sunday morning at 9:00am to learn the music for that day’s worship. If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of choir, this is a great way to try it out! See you at 9:00 in the choir room on June 16!
FEELING CREATIVE?
As we gear up for our Summer “LEGO… and Let God” Camp, we also need to plan for decorations! If this sort of volunteering appeals to you or you might have ideas “to build on”, please contact the office! We need you!
YOUTH GROUP UPDATES
Middle and high school students can bring a friend and join the group for some time together at the Pizza & Pool Party 6:00-8:00pm this Sunday at the Nofsingers (631 Hummingbird Dr, Brownsburg).
NEW MEMBER CONVERSATIONS
The pastors will be hosting a conversation with those who might be interested in joining Calvary on Sunday, June 16 and/or Sunday, June 23 in the Youth Room in the office area. All sorts of information will be shared. If you’d like to RSVP or have any questions, please contact the church office: office@calvaryunited.org.
UPCOMING TOWN HALL
Calvary leaders invite you to a Town Hall Meeting on the General Conference of the UMC Thursday, June 20 from 6:30-7:30pm in the Sanctuary. All materials will be emailed to members after the gathering.
FLAG RETIREMENT
The Boy Scouts that meet here will be properly retiring American flags this summer. If you have tattered, soiled, or old flags, please bring them to the church office by Thursday, June 20.
BROWNSBURG SCHOOLS FASTTRACK
The Brownsburg School Corporation hosts FastTrack every year for students who are on reduced or free lunch. At the event, students pick up their necessary school supplies which have been donated by various organizations and people in the community. This year, Calvary has signed up for 10,000 pencils! The pencils will be bundled in sets of 10 and delivered to the corporation office in July. We ask that you keep pencils on your shopping list for the next few weeks! There will be a box on the mission table across from the church office to collect your donations. Or, you may also order them and have them delivered to church. Thank you!
JUNE MISSION FOCUS – HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Indy area has helped to provide the opportunity of homeownership to more than 645 families since 1987. “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. We envision a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” Help us partner with them this month!
FUNDRAISING HELP FOR OUR MOUNTAIN T.O.P. TRIP
Our group that is heading to Tennessee in June is offering a way for our congregation to help defray the cost. We will be selling Prime carwash tickets for $9, $14, and $22 this Sunday. Stop by the table in the narthex if you’d like to purchase one to help in this way.
CLASSICS LUNCHEON
Mark your calendar for a Fried Chicken Picnic on Tuesday, June 25 from noon until 2:00pm! We’ll have potato salad, coleslaw, biscuits, lemonade and sweet tea. If you’d like, bring a friend and bring your favorite fruit or vegetable or dessert to share. A donation of $5 per person is appreciated to help offset the cost. Entertainment and an opportunity for dancing will follow.
MEAL HELP
A sign-up to help a church family with dinners these next few weeks has been created. If you would like to take part in this, please visit www.TakeThemAMeal.com/QDFV7462.
