Dear Calvary family,
After we enjoy time with family and friends this national holiday week, we will gather in worship on Sunday to start a new sermon series emphasizing BUILDING of Family, Community and Church as our LEGO (Let Go) and Let God Build series begins!
In preparation for Sunday, as we fast and pray today, it is an excellent reminder that people do not drift toward holiness (that is, godliness or sanctification or becoming more like Jesus). No… rather there is purpose, intentionality, and holy habits created, established, and sustained which help us build our faith.
What better metaphor for faith-building than these creative fun blocks which are the core of LEGOs?
Did you know that LEGO blocks originated in Billund, Denmark, within the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen, who began making wooden toys in 1932? Two years later he named his company LEGO after the Danish phrase leg godt, which means to “play well”.
Come join us to play well and build well our faith in our families, community, and church. See you in person as we celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism and the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
On Mission POSSIBLE with you,
Pastor Michelle
Here’s what’s happening in the life of our Church and how you can get involved:
HURRICANE BERYL
Please join us in praying for the people impacted by this hurricane. One of our members is quite concerned for family and friends in Jamaica. UMCOR is always ready to offer relief in these situations. If interested, any giving for this will be routed to UMCOR’s International Disaster Response & Recovery – Advance #982450.
YOUTH GROUP UPDATES
Youth Group will meet this Sunday, June 30, at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall at church for activities to get us ready for LEGO Camp.
SPEAKING OF OUR YOUTH…
You can find attached to the newsletter a picture from the Hendricks County 4-H Queen’s Court. There you can find our own Kelly Wagner, chosen as Miss Congeniality, and Ariane Sims as a member of the court. Congratulations to them on this special recognition!
NURSERY ATTENDANTS NEEDED
If you are willing to share the occasional Sunday morning caring for the youngest among us, please contact the church office. We are in need of more volunteers to help in this way.
CHOPPED CHALLENGE FOR FAMILY PROMISE
Our own Anne Inman has organized this fundraiser taking place Sunday, July 14 at the 4H Fairgrounds Expo Hall. Karen Striegel is leading the Calvary team at 3:00pm, with finals at 5:00pm. Bring some cash to help buy extra ingredients for us or sabotage other teams! It’s going to be a blast!
URGENT BLOOD DRIVE
You may have now heard through various media outlets that a critical blood shortage is now in place in Indiana. In an effort to help alleviate this, we will host the Versiti Blood Mobile on Monday, July 15, 9:00am-1:00pm to help with the current desperate need for supply. Sign up by visiting https://donate.indiana.versiti.org/CalvaryUnitedMethodistChurch/BloodDrive
“ERASE” THE NEED FOR PENCILS!
Great job, Church Family! We have met our goal of 10,000 pencils! Outstanding work donating and beating the deadline! They are now being bundled in packs of ten before being delivered. (If you have recently ordered some ahead of reading this, we will still accept them and send them on to the schools as well.) Thank you!
STUDY OF THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS
Pastor Michelle will be leading a discussion of The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis on Thursdays in August. Plan now to join us at either 10:00am or 6:30pm in the Youth Room. August 1 will cover the Introduction and Letters 1-7; August 8 Letters 8-15; August 15 Letters 16-23; and August 22 Letters 24-31. A study guide is on the counter in the office.
NEVER TO SOON FOR CHRISTMAS PLANS!
Tickets go on sale in August for the always popular “Purdue Christmas Show” for which Lew and Cathi White have organized a bus trip for this event and have considered every detail! The show takes place Saturday, December 7, and the cost will be $109 which includes the admission price and cost of the motorcoach. If you would like to go, please RSVP to the office by Friday, August 16 and include a $50 non-refundable deposit. An information sheet with all the important details is available on the table outside of the sanctuary or attached here.
MEMORIAL GARDEN WATERING HELP NEEDED
Our newly planted flowers and trees around the Columbarium will be in need of some watering throughout the summer. If you are able to help with this occasionally, please contact the church office or add your name to the sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex. Thank you for helping keep the garden healthy and beautiful!
DONATIONS FOR CRAFT FAIR
October may seem like a long way off yet, but the soda sales are heating up with tomorrow’s holiday and Labor Day around the corner! At the 3rd annual Craft Fair, we’ll be selling soda, and we can start accepting donations for that immediately. We will need cases of water, Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Sprite. (Please no caffeine-free or flavors as we’d like to keep ordering and serving simple.) Cases may be dropped off anytime during office hours or on Sundays. Thank you!
OUR WEBSITE
Our website has been updated! If you visit CalvaryUnited.org, you will see a new look! *Please note: We are aware that the calendar has not yet been added back on to the site. We will let you know when it’s available again. In the meantime, if you have any questions about things going on at church, feel free to contact the office.
